Title: A Scientific and Practical Treatise on American Football for Schools and Colleges Author: Stagg, A. Alonzo and Henry L. Williams Place: Hartford, CT Publisher: The Case, Lookwood & Brainard Co. Date: 1893 Description: [2], 274 pp. With diagrams of football plays throughout. 6x4, gilt-decoratied blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by co-author Henry L. Williams (1869-1931) to Richard M. Jones. Williams was head football coach for the University of Minnesota from 1900 to 1921 and still holds the highest winning percentage (.736) of any Gopher football coach. Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) is known as the father of modern American football. His innovations include: the huddle, the lateral pass, a man in motion, etc., as well as numerous designed plays. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach in the charter class of 1951. Also, influential in other sports, he developed basketball as a five-player sport (elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in its first group of inductees in 1959) and served as a coach with the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team in 1924. Bookplate from Pine Rock. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine a bit sunned, light soiling, minor stains; hinges starting to crack, else very good. Scarce. Item number: 175570
