A scarce Great War ‘Defence of Kut-al-Amarah’ D.S.O. group of five awarded to Major Edward Milford, 76th Punjabis Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R., silver-gilt and enamel, with integral top riband bar; 1914-15 Star (Maj. E. Milford, 76/Punjabis.); British War and Victory Medals (Maj E. Milford. - the Victory medal named to 21800 Pte. H. J. T. Hunt. R. War. R.); India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, Waziristan 1921-24 (Lt-Col. E. Milford, 3-1 Punjab R.) good very fine (5) £1,200-£1,400 Footnote D.S.O. London Gazette 23 October 1919: ‘For distinguished service in connection with the defence of Kut-al-Amarah. Dated 3rd June 1919.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 19 October 1916. Edward Milford was born on 28 September 1878, son of F. C. Milford, and educated at Hileybury, He was commissioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1898; Lieutenant, 1899; Captain 1907; transferred to the Indian Army, 76th Punjabis, 1913. Lieutenant Colonel, 3/1st Punjabi Regiment, 1921; retired 1925. Lieutenant-Colonel Milford died on 29 September 1944. Milford is listed as a prisoner from Kut in the book From Kastanumi to Kedos: Being a Record of Experiences of Prisoners of War in Turkey 1916-1918, by Sir Leonard Woolley
