A scarce Fleet Air Arm ‘Suez Crisis’ fighter pilot’s N.G.S. awarded to Lieutenant Commander J. Worth, Fleet Air Arm and Royal Navy, who led a flight of 800 Squadron’s Sea Vampires during the crisis, and carried out a number of low level rocket attacks on targets such as Almaza airfield, Huckstep Camp, and the coastal gun emplacements at Port Said. He claimed a number of ground targets, including aircraft and tanks Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Near East (Lieut. J. Worth. R.N.) very fine £600-£800 Footnote Jack Worth was a native of Leicester, joined the Royal Navy as a Boy, and was posted to H.M. Ships St. George and Ganges, 1945-46. Subsequent service included with H.M.S. Kenya in the West Indies, and as a radar operator with H.M.S. Jutland, 1948-49. Worth advanced to Petty Officer, and served with H.M.S. Triumph from 1949. He was appointed an Aviation Cadet, and trained with HMS Indefatigable and at Royal Naval Air Station, Siskin at Gosport, 1950-1951. Worth trained with the Fleet Air Arm at RAF Syerston, 1952-1953, before being posted as a pilot with 759 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm and Naval Fighter School at Royal Naval Air Station Lossiemouth, later that year. He subsequently served with 804 Squadron aboard HMS Eagle in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, 1954-1955. Having served on an Air Warfare Officer Course at R.N.A.S. Lossiemouth, Worth was posted for operational service as a Lieutenant and Flight Commander with 800 Squadron aboard H.M.S. Albion (Carrier) during the Suez Crisis, October - December 1956. Worth flew Hunter’s, Scimitar’s, Sea Vampires and Sea Hawke’s with 800 Squadron FAA on HMS Albion during the Suez crisis. He reported making strikes on a Il-28 and Il-14 transport, 1 November 1956, when flying XE400/107 and leading a flight of Sea Hawke’s on strafing attacks on Almaza airfield. During another staffing attack by Sea Hawkes from Albion, Worth, flying XE411/108, personally claimed a Harvard, a Chipmunk and a Yak. On 2 November 1956, Worth again flying XE411/108, reported his flight rocketing a group of 86 tanks at Huckstep Camp. Two days later Worth led another low level attack on Almaza: ‘As we departed at low level and high speed, a flock of birds, startled by the flak, suddenly appeared in front of us out of a copse of trees. I got the full impact which also removed the nose cones of both drop tanks, producing a superb air brake!’ Out of the four aircraft he was leading during this attack, two were hit by flak, his by birds and the last damaged by overstress! Worth also carried out attacks on coastal gun emplacements at Port Said. Worth returned to the UK, and served as instructor with 764 Squadron, at R.N.A.S. Lossiemouth, 1957-1959. He continued in the same capacity with 736 Squadron, and then as an Air Warfare Instructor with 803 Squadron, also at Lossiemouth. Worth served with H.M.S. Undaunted, 1960-61, before being posted on attachment as a pilot with VX4 Squadron, US Navy at Naval Air Station Point Mugu in USA, 1961-1963. He returned to the UK, and commanded 736 Squadron, at Lossiemouth 1963-65, and 800 Squadron, 1965-67. Worth advanced to Lieutenant Commander in 1965, and subsequent postings included: as brigade air support officer with Royal Marine Commando Brigade in Singapore, Malaysia, 1968-1969; as Lieutenant Commander (Flying) aboard HMS Ark Royal; and as Staff Officer with Naval Training at the Ministry of Defence in London, 1970-1972. Worth was employed on Senior Officers War Course, College of Air Warfare, at RAF Manby in 1972, and served as Commander (Air) aboard HMS Ark Royal, 1973-1975. He studied at the NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy, 1976, before serving as a Staff Officer with Headquarters, NATO South in Naples, Italy, 1976-1978. Worth served as Deputy Director Naval Warfare with the Ministry of Defence in London, 1979-1982; and served as naval attaché in South Africa, 1982-1983.
