The gesso ground, and therefore the decoration, is cracked to varying degrees almost throughout. There are losses to the gesso within the figures' haloes (leaving very few traces of the gilding in this area), another in the area of the Virgin's right wrist, and several around the edges of the panel. The decoration is otherwise quite well preserved but somewhat obscured by the darkened and oxidised remains of varnish.
