A ROMAN MARBLE DOUBLE-SIDED OSCILLUM CIRCA 1ST CENTURY A.D. Disk-shaped, sculpted in relief, the obverse with two theater masks, a frontal male mask of comedy to the left, his hair rolled back from his undulating forehead, with a heavy knitted brow, pug nose, long beard and open upturned mouth, a female mask of tragedy to the right in profile, the high plaited onkos tied by a fillet, with a hooked nose and a pointed chin, on a naturalistic rocky ground; the reverse in lower relief with a centaur carrying an amphora, prancing with the left equine legs lifted, with a muscular human torso, his hair a mass of wild wavy locks; both sides with a raised plain border, preserving an iron pin along the upper edge on the reverse for suspension 13¾ in. (34.9 cm.) diameter
