First Edition. A Congregational minister from New England, Bingham arrived in Hawaii in 1820, and spent the next 21 years there in missionary work. He learned the language and created a written language as well, translating the Bible into Hawaiian in conjunction with William Ellis Sabin says this is "probably the best work on the Sandwich Islands." Hill 127; Sabin 5432. Lot Amendments Condition: Dampstaining to top margin of last half of book, foxing/offset to title and frontispiece, 6" crease tear to map, plus 2" tear; old library number on back of title-page, blindstamp of Bath, Maine, Marine Library to two contents-leaves; else very good, an attractive copy, with the nautical bookplate of Harold Marsh Sewall.
