A red sandstone relief with the legend of Savitri and Satyavan India, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, 11th century Very finely carved with Satyavan lying on his back, holding a lotus in his right hand, dressed in a simple dhoti and adorned with a sash and various necklaces, his head reclining in the lap of Savitri, herself seated on a low cushion with her right hand supporting Satyavan and her left hand raised, richly adorned with various jewelry and a swirling sash, the locks of hair finely delineated and secured in a bun, with Yama holding a staff and a female figures at right, all beneath the boughs of a large tree 22 in. (55.8 cm.) high
