A Red Raku Chawan [Tea-Bowl] and Two Others Edo Period (18th-Mid 19th Century) The red Raku chawan of low-fired, lead-glazed pottery, the hand-built, roughly potted body impressed in places with finger-marks, the interior with a spiral depression, the red glaze covering the entire bowl with the except of a small area around the low foot, the base within the foot stamped with the character Raku , with an old French label inscribed with a monogram No. 38 ; the Oribe-Style Mukozuke [serving-cup] roughly cylindrical with a low foot, covered in off-white and green glazes which run down to the underside, the off-white surfaces further decorated with iron-oxide floral and other plant motifs, the base with an impressed mark Shuntai , stamped Shuntai ; and another chawan of low-fired, lead-glazed pottery, the roughly-potted body with slightly facetted sides, covered in an olive-green and reddish translucent glaze, the base with an old French label with a monogram and another inscribed 24 and 24,923 3 3/8in. (8.6cm.), 3 11/16in. (9.3cm.) and 3¼in. (8.2cm.) high respectively (3)
