A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF THE DEITY FUDO MYO-O Katalognummer: NE1118-035 Wood netsuke Japan late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A very rare depiction of Fudo Myo-o (“The Immovable”), corresponding to Acala in Sanskrit. Especially the flaming hair and rich garments indicate this is a deity. One hand forms the abhaya mudra, the other should be holding a sword, which is missing. As a netsuke, this Fudo surely functioned as an amulet, as it is said to fend off evil and disease, or appearing as counsel to the deceased in front of the judge of the dead to see about how they will be reborn.
