In Chinese culture, the elephant is the symbol of strength, sagacity and prudence. It is also sacred to Buddhism, often depicted as offering flowers to Buddha. Compare with a related gilt-bronze elephant, Tang dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 22 March 2022, lot 665.
