A RARE SMALL BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, YOU MIDDLE WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 10TH CENTURY BC Of pear shape and oval section, encircled by a bow-string band, a band of paired birds confronted on a small animal-form mask cast in relief on each side, the domed cover with deep collar beneath a similar bird band interrupted by two vertical tabs at the ends below the knob, with a ridged bail handle cast with dragon scroll terminating in rings that attach to loops on the vessel and are obscured by horned ungulate masks, the interior of the vessel and cover cast with a six-character inscription, with a mottled grey and milky green patina 8¼ in. (20.9 cm.) high to top of handle, wood stand, zitan box inscribed by Zoroku and Japanese wood box
