A rare Regency English treadle-driven lathe Holtzappffel and Deyerlein, London, circa 1815 The channelled wooden bed applied with one-piece cast iron headstock fitted with block incorporating six graduated mahogany pulley drive wheel channels to the spindle and stamped HOLTZAPFFEL DEYERLEIN, COCKSPUR STREET, LONDON to the work face, with a compound slide toolpost, separate tool rest and tailstock with adjustable centre, the whole raised on wooden frame incorporating treadle drive with flywheel, (base with worm damage), the bed 112cm (44ins) long. The partnership between John Jacob Holtzapffel and John George Deyerlein was formed in 1794 and was originally located at 118 Long-acre. In 1810 the Long-acre workshop was destroyed by fire and by 1815 the business had relocated to 10 Cockspur Street, Charing Cross before moving again to 64 Charing Cross Road by 1820. In 1827 John George Deyerlein died and was replaced by George Holtzapffel resulting in the name of the firm changing to Holtzapffel & Co. Charles continued the business after his father’s death in 1835 and production continued until 1914. Holtzapffel and Deyerlein were leading makers Mechanical Apparatus and Working Tools, consisting of Lathes and other Machinery, Work Benches, and Chests of Tools for general purposes. They also became dealers in hardwood and ivory and specialised in supplying and setting up ‘Mechanical Laboratories’ for amateurs.
