Referred to by its species name, cuprian elbaite, the gemstone soon became known as Paraiba and took the gem world by storm. The traditional jewellery houses, such as Bulgari, Cartier and Harry Winston have included them in their high jewellery collections. They range in colour from neon blue, greenish blue, blue-green, green, mint green; however, the most sought-after stones exhibit a vivid neon almost electric blue with strong saturation. Traditionally mined in Brazil, copper bearing tourmalines have been discovered in both Mozambique and Nigeria. Although very similar, only those stones mined in Brazil can be defined as 'Paraiba' and tend to be in greater demand. This 5.09 carat Paraiba is a quintessential example of the gemstone: rare size, neon colour, fine clarity and of Brazilin origin.
