QING DYNASTY, LATE 18TH/19TH CENTURY
A RARE PAIR OF HARDSTONE EMBELLISHED ZITAN -VENEERED DOUBLE-GOURD SHAPED WALL PANELS QING DYNASTY, LATE 18TH/19TH CENTURY Of stylised double-gourd form, each section is inlaid with an ensemble to depict scholars' objects including books, archaic vases, bowls of auspicious fruits, a fish pendant hanging qing chime, a brush pot containing implements, a ruyi sceptre, a bi disc, carvings of flower, in jade, wood and precious stones reserved on a red lacquer ground. Each fits into a veneered zitan frame of conforming shape, finely carved in low relief with lotus and classic scrolls and lined with a keyfret border. The mid-section of the frame is decorated with two bats on the sides, each holding a large ruyi head enclosing kui scrolls and a central lotus bloom, flanked by recticulated kui dragon motifs. The reverse side is lacquered black and gilt with bats amidst clouds. 43 1/2 in. (110 cm.) high, 29 1/8 in. (74 cm.) wide (2)
