A RARE LARGE BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, YOU EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 11TH-10TH CENTURY BC The pear-shaped body divided into four sections by vertical hooked flanges, with a central band of paired addorsed birds with coiled beaks and upswept tails, each bird confronted on a flange, below a band of raised vertical ribs, with further pairs of birds on the slightly spreading foot and pairs of birds facing away from the horned dragon- mask terminals of the arched handle cast on top with paired, attenuated cicadas with large eyes divided by further horned dragon masks at the curve of the handle, the cover with conforming vertical hooked flanges dividing a ribbed band between further bands of birds, cast at each end with a large upturned projection cast with a taotie mask, all below a tall finial cast with six long-eared animal masks, all cast in crisp relief and reserved on bands of leiwen , with the same five-character inscription cast inside the cover and base of the interior of the vessel, with reddish-brown patina and extensive bluish-green encrustation 16 7/8 in. (42.8 cm.) high
