A rare french Renaissance gilt-brass striking small table clock Unsigned. Fourth quarter 16th Century In the form of a miniature tower, the square case entirely engraved with with foliage, urns overflowing with flowers, cornucopiae, an eagle and an owl, the right side cut with an arched window to view the fusee (for state of wind), the detachable open-cast dome with flowers and foliage and four straps terminating with urn finials, the base plate engraved with eagle heads and pierced for winding, the gilt-brass dial with Roman chapter ring and later blued steel hand, foliate engraved centre and foliate engraved upper spandrels, the two-tier movement with baluster columns to the upper tier and ionic columns to the lower section, going train with iron contrate wheel from a pinion beneath the slender fusee, altered verge escapement, capped gilt-brass spring barrel, the strike train with later spring barrel and replaced countwheel strike on a later bell above secured by four slender straps 4 1/3in. (11.5cm.) high
