A RARE DATED SILVER AND GOLD-INLAID BRONZE CENSER NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY, DATED XUANHE FIFTH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1123 The rectangular censer is cast with fin-like flanges on four corners, standing on four columnar feet, decorated on the exterior with gold and silver inlays. The four sides of the body are each adorned with a barbed hexafoil cartouche against a floret diaper ground. The cartouches on the wider sides each encloses a ferocious scaly dragon emerging from cresting waves, while the cartouches on the narrower sides each depict a phoenix in flight above rolling waves. Each leg is picked out with a cicada in gold and silver. The base is inscribed with the characters Da Song Xuanhe wunian sanyue zao , 'Made in the third lunar month in the fifth year of the Xuanhe reign of the Great Song'. 5 1/8 in. (13.3 cm) high
