Beschreibung:

A RARE CHINESE WHITISH JADE CONCH SHELL BRUSH WASHER, the front spiral part of the shell with incised details, leading to the central cavity terminating in a swept end, sitting on waves, the back with some subtle russet markings, Qing, probably Qianlong, 3.25" long Provenance: The Collection of the late John Walden (1925-2013). The conch shell is a rare but highly significant subject to find in jade. It symbolises the pure and true teachings of the Buddha and is also a symbol of the Buddha's voice, used to call worshipers together. Actual white conch shells are commonly used ritual implements in Tibetan Buddhism, to which the Qianlong Emperor adhered. This religious devotion was also a key political symbol of the Qing Emperor's rule. It is significant that amongst the most precious objects placed in front of the Emperor a white conch shell took central place. Very few examples in jade have appeared on the market. Christie's Hong Kong
