A rare Charles I tentatively ascribed East Anglian slip-top spoon, of good gauge , the broad stem tapering down towards the rounded bowl, the rudimentary 'V' rat-tail engraved with a tiny crest*, makers mark a W in a shield on the back of the stem, near the terminal, struck once in the bowl and once on the back of the stem near the rat-tail with a crown or coronet mark, and once on the back of the stem with a six petalled flower mark, possibly by William Whitinge, Ipswich, circa 1640 - 18.5cm long, 2oz. * The crest of de Montacute and Montagu/Montague. This crest was used by the Montagu family whowere Dukes and Earls (now extinct) of Montagu and the current Baron Montagu of Beaulieu - any of whom may have had a collection. Among the untitled Montagu families who used this crest the one recorded in the Dictionary of Suffolk Crests (1998) is Montagu of Marlesford, Gunton, Beccles. Noted in a book published 1848.
