A Rare Cased 13-Bore Charles Jones's Patent 'Water-Proof' D.B. Percussion Sporting Gun By Charles Jones 32, Cockspur Street, London, No. 91, circa 1840 With browned twist barrels and gold fore-sight, signed 'Charles Jones's Patent, 32, Cockspur Street, London' on the elevated rib (some light pitting, mainly under the breeches), short case-hardened patent breeches engraved with a snipe at the centre and each with two gold lines, the nipples each stamped 'Jones' and screwing into the centre of the hook at the rear, finely engraved action with enclosed hammers and sliding cover, the tang engraved 'Patent 91', case-hardened scroll engraved cocking levers, finely figured walnut half-stock, chequered grip, finely engraved blued iron mounts, the forward extension of the trigger-plate engraved 'Charles Jones's Patent Water Proof Locks with Concentric Sears & Triggers', gold escutcheon engraved with ducal coronet, crest, and Garter motto, original brass-mounted ramrod, and much original finish: in original lined and fitted finely figured brass-bound mahogany case with accessories including Sykes powder-flask and a tin of Charles Jones's patent percussion caps, the lid with three labels, the exterior with flush-fitting carrying handle and circular escutcheon engraved with the same coronet, crest, and motto as the gun, Birmingham proof marks 29½in. (75cm.) barrels
