A rare bronze figure of Vishnu South India, Pallava period, 8th century Elegantly cast standing on a circular disk with his principle right hand raised in abhayamudra , the upper hands holding the chakra and conch, and the principle left in katyavalambita resting at his hip, dressed in an ankle-length striated dhoti with sashes fanning to the sides and adorned with multiple belts and festooned girdle, the four-strand sacred thread encircling his torso, the face with elongated eyes flanked by makara earrings and surmounted by a tall jatamukuta with thick locks of hair hanging across the upper back, the jewelry and garments very finely rendered on the reverse 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm.) high
