Beschreibung:

A rare and interesting set of four George II candlesticks, on trefoil-shaped, domed rocaille bases, the stems modelled as sunflowers with detachable, flowerhead nozzles, leafy stalks with side tendrils, the bases 'raised' and chased with matted husks and a waved-like ground centred by three scroll vinaigrettes*; one with an owl, one with poseiden and one with a dragon and feames, by John Schuppe**, London 1755, approx 12in (30.5cm) high, 92oz. (4) *The form and decoration appear to be emblematic of the four element, AIR represented by the owl, WATER by poseiden, FIRE by the dragon and the EARTH by the growing flower 'column'. ** Schuppe, John (1686), No record of apprenticeship of freedom, believed from his name and work to be an immigrant Dutchman. Mark entered as largeworker, 28th June 1753. Address: Little Deans Court, St.Martin's Le Grand. Moved to 6 New Rents, 17th July 1755, Heal records him as plateworker, at the second address above, in the parl. report list 1773. His mark appears almost entirely on cream jugs modelled in the Dutch taste as cows, but occasionally met with on other small fancies such as figure tapersticks. Grimwade, A.G: London Goldsmiths and their marks.
