The finest spinels are found in the Mogok Stone Tract in Upper Burma which partly explains why they can be confused with rubies from the same region. In fact, the "Black Prince Ruby" which is the central stone in the British Imperial State Crown, is a red spinel. They can be found in royal jewels through the ages and, in the 14th century, were believed to bring peace and well-being to the owner.
