Beschreibung:

A Queen Anne walnut and feather banded double dome bureau bookcase, circa 1710, the moulded cornice above a pair of bevelled glass inset doors, opening to adjustable shelves, the fall opening to a well section with sliding cover an an arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes, above two short and two long drawers, on bracket feet, 212cm high, 106cm wide, 61cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Wiltshire. By direct family descent, previously forming part of the furnishings of Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire Successive houses on the site of Luton Hoo seem to have changed hands several times until in 1762 the then owner, Francis Hearne (MP for Bedford), sold the estate John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute. The present house at Luton Hoo was built for the 3rd Earl of Bute by the neoclassical architect Robert Adam Robert Adam's completed mansion was transformed by the architect Robert Smirke (later Sir Robert, 1781-1867) circa 1830. Following a significant fire in 1843 the house remained a burnt shell until the estate was sold in 1848 to John Shaw Leigh, a Liverpool solicitor and property speculator. The Leigh family continued to own Luton Hoo until 1903. Condition report disclaimer
