London Gazette 12 June 1947: Acting Captain (Commodore Second Class) Walter Richard Shewring, Royal Indian Navy Liaison Officer in London. M.I.D. London Gazette 29 February 1944: ‘For good services in action in the Far East.’ Walter Richard Shewring was born in Bath, Somerset, in 1901, and served as a Midshipman in the Royal Naval Reserve during the final months of the Great War. Transferring to the Royal Indian Navy, he served during the Second World War with the rank of Acting Captain, and subsequently served as the Royal Indian Navy’s Liaison Officer in London in the lead-up to Indian Independence.
