A PORTABLE WRITING BOX AND STATIONERY BOX ( KAKESUZURIBAKO ) meiji period (late 19th century), signed shomin saku [ogawa shomin (1847-1891)] Of rectangular shape with round corners arranged in two tiers, the deeper stationery box supporting the writing box and lid, designed overall with motifs illustrating a poem by Priest Jakuren which is inlaid in mother-of-pearl script on the cover, the motifs including, on the lid, three bundles of faggots in low-relief gold lacquer on a kimpun -dusted roiro ground below gold hills intersected by horizontal bands of clouds in gold and black takamaki-e, gimpun, kimpun and hirame and with several cherry trees, the branches and leaves of gold lacquer and the blossoms of gilt-metal, the sky area in the background roiro-nuri and mura-nashiji ; the sides of both boxes decorated in low-relief takamaki-e with a section of a bridge spanning a river of gold and black togidashi which continues around the perimeter below a sky matching the lid, each long side of the box also inlaid with a soft-metal boat carrying a cargo of faggots; the interior of the lid of the writing box, its lower interior and the interior of the stationery box lacquered indentically with tomo-e medallions, seaweed and bands of nashiji , silver and hirame clouds enhanced by okibirame and needle-like pieces of kirigane ; the writing box fitted with a removable tray containing an inkstone below a silver mizuire cast as conjoined tomo-e medallions; the bases of the writing box and stationery box roiro and sparse nashiji and hirame , the rims silver; signed on the base in gold lacquer as above; enclosed in a wood storage box inscribed on the lid Suzuribako/Jakuren hoshi kai (Writing box, poem by Priest Jakuren) and inscribed on paper labels Otanakazari (display piece) Meiji nijuichinen rokugatsu bijutsu tenrankai goyo-hin (Art exhibition, Meiji 21 (1888), 6th month); inscribed on paper labels on the underside of the lid Meiji tenno yuimotsu (Legacy of Emperor Meiji) Taisho gannen junigatsu sanjuichinichi hairyo (Received on Taisho 1 (1912), 12th month, 31st day) and with large red paper seal Taisho gannen sentei yuimotsu no sho (Seal of the late Emperor's legacy, Taisho 1); the underside of the lid also inscribed in ink with the artist's name Shinshin Shomin zo and seal Shomin no in 7 5/8 x 7 x 3 5/8in. (19.3 x 17.7 x 9.3cm.)
