A Portable Christian Altar Momoyama Period (late 16th century) The altar of lacquered wood inlaid with mother-of-pearl and containing a painting of Joseph holding the Christ child, probably Hispano-Flemish, late 16th-early 17th century; the altar case rectangular with hinged doors with original copper fittings and latch, the outer doors designed in gold and silver lacquer with pheasants and paulownia, camellia, cherry and mandarin orange trees, some of the leaves of mother-of-pearl inlay, the doors framed by thin line borders of mother-of-pearl inlay and the surrounding outer edge of the frame a zig-zag pattern of gold and black lacquer and inlaid mother-of-pearl triangles, the sides of the exterior altar decorated with foliage in gold and silver lacquer in mother-of-pearl inlay, and the top of the altar case painted in gold lacquer with slender, looping foliate designs on either side of the metal suspension ring; the interiors of the doors matching the outer decoration and the top and bottom of the altar which frame the icon a checkerboard border of inlaid mother-of-pearl squares 14¾ x 11½ x 2in. (37.5 x 29.2 x 5.1cm.)
