A PARTICULARY FINE AND RARE MID-19TH CENTURY DRY-CARD "ADMIRALTY PATTERN ONE STANDARD COMPASS" , engraved on the azimuth circle "No 27" , the unsigned 7½in (20cm) paper-on-mica card with sapphire jewelled cup bearing, divided into points and quarter points, the periphery with reverse engraved 0-90 graduations each degree subdivided to 20 minutes of arc, on the underside of the card a manuscript notation reading - No 27 7-2-23 Def 12 00' M.M. 1550 and small counter balancing leas weights, four "edge bar" black painted magnetic needles secured to thin circumferential ring, contained in heavy turned and gimballed metal bowl painted externally black and internally white with black lubber line, the top edge (verge) of the bowl with finely engraved inset silver 360 relative bearing circle divided in half-degrees and numbered every 10 with the datum 360 directly above the lubber line, on the outside towards the bottom of the bowl a "card lifter" operated by a screw assembly for locking the compass card, the bowl surmounted by an integral centre-pivoted azimuth ring having silver vernier scales at opposite ends of two of its four arms allowing angles to be read to 'one minute of arc' , back-sight with prismbox and pivoted shade, folding fore-sight vane with black-glass reflector; contained with accessories in wooden storage case.
