A PAIR OF VICTORIAN SAMUEL SABINE EDKINS TERRESTRIAL AND CELESTIAL GLOBES Circa 1850, the terrestrial with cartouche To the Right Honorable, Sir Joseph Banks, Bart, K.B. President of the Royal Society, THE NEW BRITISH TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, containing all the latest Discoveries and Communications from the most correct and authentic Observations and Surveys to the ? 1852, By Capt Cook and more recent Navigators engraved from most accurate Drawings by Mr Arrowsmith, Geographer. And a second cartouche Manufactured by S.S. Edkins Son in Law & Successor to the late T.M. Bardin Salisbury Square, London. Made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the southern polar calotte with a printed hour dial, brass pointer and Published by S.S Edkins Son in Law & Successor to the late T.M. Bardin Salisbury Square London , the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the equinoctial colure graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in twelve times 1-30°, the oceans with trade winds and numerous tracks of Captain Cook's voyages with dates, the Antarctic with various notes relating to sightings of ice and seaweed, the continents in yellow, with some nation states coloured a darker shade and come deliberately hand-outlines in red, finely detailed with rivers, mountains, towns and cities; the celestial with cartouche THE NEW BRITISH CELESTIAL GLOBE, Conatining the position of nearly 600 Stars, Clusters, Nubulae, Planetary observations and discoveries by Dr. Maskelyne, Dr. Hershel, The revd. Fr. Wollation &c. and a second cartouche Manufactured by S.S. Edkins Son in Law to the late T.M. BARDIN Salisbury Square London , made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores laid to the ecliptic poles, the axis through the celestial poles, the celestial South Pole with a printed hour dial, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the colures graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in twelve times 1-30° with twilight zone, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments, the stars shown to nine orders of magnitude and variously labeled; both spheres with stamped brass hour dial at the North Pole and brass index for the printed hour dial at the South Pole, with stamped brass meridian circle, the mahogany horizon with hand-coloured paper ring showing degrees of amplitude and azimuth, days of the houses of the Zodiac and days of the month, edged in red, on scrolling, tripod legs See illustration
