Beschreibung:

A pair of sustantial and impressive Mediaeval sculpted limestone gargoyles, English, 14th century, both with grotesque human faces with wide open mouths, one as a kneeling and draped human figure, the other of zoomorphic form, squatting on its haunches and holding a dog between its knees, both on integral square section bases, 141 and 143cm high respectively, the bases 45cm square The particular stances of these gargoyles, kneeling or on their haunches, are of course eminently suited for figural sculpture designed to project outwards from a vertical structure, and as such examples of this type of pose can be found from across Europe. However, this style of stance would seem to have been particularly utilised in England during the Mediaeval period. A 14th century gargoyle adorning the Chapter House at York Minster is certainly a closely comparable example, where the head, torso and arms of a man issue from the haunches and feet of an animal form. He also cradles a secondary beast, in this case a serpent, between his knees in a very similar composition to the second of the two gargoyles offered in the lot here Provenance: Private Collection, London Condition report disclaimer
