A pair of Sèvres coral-red-ground vases "Etrusques", circa 1795, of classical form, with twin swan and mask handles, each painted with motifs pompéiens, dans le gout de Lagrenée, with two almond shaped panels of dancing muses, connected by formal gilt scroll work on café au lait-ground, the broad neck with a band of rose trails and formal ornament, on marbled bases. One indistinctly inscribed Sèvres, R. F. Bernard Chevalier refers in the Catalogue des porcelaines de Sèvres du château de Fontainebleau to a pair of vases of the same form as the 'vases etrusques'. However, he assumes that this form might be associated to the models listed as 'vase â tete de femmes' or 'vase cygne' in the Sèvres archive of the revolutionary period. A pair of vases similar in decoration to the example in Fontainebleu have been recorded as: '2 vase a tetes de femmes dessin de la Grenée arabesques camayeu sur fond'. The vases were estimated at 250 francs when they entered the 'magasin du vente'.
