A pair of Russian trompe-l'oeil armchairs after Vasili Petrovich Shutov, circa 1900 in chiselled wood, each rail carved with the adage «тише едешь, дальше будешь» ("the slower you go, the faster you'll arrive"), the armrests formed as axes, the seat with a pair of gloves and the back as a stylised balalaika height of tallest: 95.5cm (37 5/8in). Fußnoten Provenance Private collection, England Acquired in the 1930's, then by descent The form derives from Russian folk furniture and was originally produced by Vasili Shutov (1826-1887) in 1870 for the All-Russian Manufacturing Exhibition in St. Petersburg. His iconic design came to embody the nostalgic Russian style, so appreciated by Emperor Alexander III, and remained popular for decades.
