A PAIR OF GERMAN SILVER DISPLAY-DISHES
MARK OF ISRAEL THELOTT, AUGSBURG, 1687-1691
A PAIR OF GERMAN SILVER DISPLAY-DISHES MARK OF ISRAEL THELOTT, AUGSBURG, 1687-1691 Hexagonal with crimped borders, chased with foliage and flowers, the centres with scenes of birds, each stamped twice with a coat-of-arms, marked near rim, the rims further stamped with later Italian import marks 13 3/8 in. (34.1 cm.) wide 22 oz. (678 gr.) The arms are those of Stockalper of Valais, Switzerland, perhaps for Kaspar Jodok Stockalper (1609-1691), a merchant, banker and politician who set up a commercial empire in the 17th century, cornering trade through the Swiss Alps via the the Simplon pass. The empire eventually spread as far as France and Spain. A Swiss silver-gilt cup formed as a unicorn also stamped with the Stockalper arms was sold from the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé Collection, Christie's Paris, 24 February 2009, lot 141. (2)
