Beschreibung:

A PAIR OF FRENCH PORCELAIN FIGURAL SPILLVASES, after the romantic indianistic novel "Attala" by Chateaubriand, both modelled as South American Indians; she as an Amazon wearing a quiver of arrows, he as her gallant companion with a club, on shaped pedestal bases (minor damages, some gilt rubbing), 19th Century 30 cm high François-Auguste-René Vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) diplomat and author, precursor of the Romantic movement in France. In 1791 he sailed for the United States, a stay memorable for his firsthand acquaintance with Indians. A fragment of an unfinished Indian epic appeared as Attala (1801); immediately successful, it combined the simplicity of a classical idyll with the more troubled ideals of Romanticism. (2)
