A PAIR OF CENTRAL ITALIAN (TUSCAN) FLINTLOCK PISTOLS circa 1750-60 With two-stage barrels, the breech sections octagonal changing to polygonal (shortened within the pistols' early working life), bevelled locks engraved with a bold design of scrolling foliage involving a male profile head (one top jaw associated, one sear-spring missing, the steels refaced), carved figured walnut stocks decorated with voluted mouldings about the ramrod-pipe, brass mounts including spurred pommels with raised moulded borders and each fitted with a cap engraved with an expanded flowerhead, solid side-plates of shaped outline engraved en suite with the locks, horn fore-end caps, and iron-tipped wooden ramrods (belt hooks removed). 14 i n (35.6cm) (2)
