A Pair Of 16-Bore Silver-Mounted Flintlock Holster Pistols By Griffin & Tow, London, London silver hallmarks for 1773 With two-stage slightly belled barrels signed on the top flat of each breech, silver fore-sights, gold-lined touch-holes, engraved tangs, signed flat bevelled locks each with safety-catch and stepped tail, the pans with water drains, and the steel-springs with a linked swivel (each cock a working replacement), figured walnut full stocks each carved with a shell in relief behind the barrel tang, full silver mounts cast and chased with rococo ornament, comprising pierced side-plates, vacant escutcheons, spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap, engraved trigger-guards each with shell and flower finial, and turned ramrod-pipes, and original horn-tipped ramrods (one incomplete), London proof marks, silver maker's mark of John King 16in. (40.7cm.) The linked swivel on the steel-springs is found on a pair of silver-mounted pistols supplied to William Constable of Burton Constable Hall in 1771, as well as on other Griffin & Tow pistols of this distinctive type.
