A NAPOLEONIC PRISONER OF WAR MODEL OF THE MINERVE Solid hull planked over in bone, pinned in place with copper pins. The whale strake and top strake are from balleen. Other hull details include chain plates, head rails, carved quarter galleries and transom. The figure head is a caped classical figure which retains some of the original polychrome. The deck is a solid piece of bone veneer and is fitted with brass cannons on bone carriages, windlass, anchors of brass, pin and fife rails, ladders, deck gratings, double ship's wheel, skylight. There are two boats which are run out to the port and starboard sides with oars. The masts and spars are of bone. The lower section of each mast is bound with alternating bands of gold and veneer. The rigging is complete and very well done. The model is mounted on an inlaid plinth with mahogany, boxwood and ebony inlays. All in a mahogany and glass case with a name board in mahogany and gold lettering, 16 x 6 x 12in. (40.7 x 16.5 x 30.5cm.)
