A Model Of The Danish First Rate Ship Fredericus Quartus Peter Ness; American, 20th century A very fine scale and ornate model of this the largest Danish ship of the line ever built. The hull of the model is built up from the solid and planked over in yellow pine. The hull planking is held in place with trunnels. Above the waterlinea pair of ebonized bands separate the waterline from the lower gun deck. Similar bands separate each of the gun decks up to the deck level. The hull of the model is pierced for 100 guns and each of the gun ports is painted to represent the Danish flag. The topsides of the model, above the sheer line is painted green with gold painted molding just below the bulwark. The interior of the bulwarks are painted red. The model is fitted with numerous ornamental details, including an elaborately carved figurehead, replicas of the Danish crown over the quarter galleries, busts, lions, elephants, figures and many other precisely carved decorations. The deck of the model is also planked and is fitted with numerous details which include: anchors, cannons, ladders, pin & fife rails, belfry with bell, capstan, lanterns, railings, belaying pins and numerous other details. The model is very well rigged and the rigging details include: bowsprit, three masts, cross spars, standing and running rigging all of which is properly led through blocks, served and seized, and the tails lashed to belaying pins. Each of the lower masts is bound and seized to the tops. At the top of each mast and at the bow and stern is flying a hand stitched Danish naval ensign. The rigging includes fore stays, backstays, bracing lies, sheets, halyards, topping lifts, ratlines run through deadeyes, and numerous other rigging details. The model is displayed on a pair of turned pedestals, mounted on a mahogany board and displayed in a plexiglass case on an ornate mahogany table. 38½ x 8½ x 41 in. (97.7 x 21.6 x 104.2 cm.) model on stand.
