Beschreibung:

"A MEMBER OF THE MARY-LE-BONE CLUB" The Cricketer's Guide: containing complete instructions to persons of all ages London: Dean and Co., [c. 1836]. 16mo. (4¼ x 2½in; 103 x 65mm), folding frontispiece with wood-engraved figures, 8 wood-engravings in text (frontispiece lightly spotted and tipped onto title, p. 15 with neat repair at inner margin), red calf for Goldman, blue wrappers preserved, front wrapper with woodcut figure of a bowler (front wrapper creased, with repaired tear and slight losses at inner margin). Provenance : J.W. Goldman (binding and pasted-over bookplate; lot 81 at his sale, 24 November 1966, bought in at £10). FIRST EDITION, especially rare with the wrappers which give the publication price of sixpence. The Taylor and Goldman catalogues only include the later edition [1840] with the imprint of Dean and Munday. The author describes himself as "A member of the Mary-le-Bone Club" which in 1836 was almost 50 years old and had 245 members. Allen 31; Padwick 387.
