A Maori stone hand club, (Patu Onewa), late 18th / early 19th century, the waisted handle pierced for a thong, beneath a knopped pommel, 39.5cm long Provenance: The current owners are unsure how the patu came into their possession, but it has been conjectured that it was a gift to James Sowerby (1757-1822), naturalist and illustrator. The leading naturalist and botanist Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was a friend of Sowerby and was a member of the First Voyage commanded by Capt.
