A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA JIN DYNASTY (1115-1234) The bodhisattva shown standing atop a rounded base with right foot put slightly forward, the right hand pendent and left hand held in abhaya mudra , the broad, bare chest spanned by a foliate beaded necklace suspending a pendant and a sash tied diagonally around the torso with loose bow and falling from the right shoulder in a long fold which is held up by the graceful right hand, a belt imitating gilded jade or gold plaques securing the skirt doubled over at the waist and falling in graceful folds to just above the bare feet, the full, fleshy face with small, sensuous mouth and piercing eyes enhanced by inlaid black glass pupils, the hair drawn up into a tall topknot behind an ornate crown and dressed at the sides in a loop over each ear and long knotted plaits falling onto the shoulders, traces of red, green, white and gold pigment 63 in. (160 cm.) high
