A MAGNIFICENT AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT OCTAGONAL INLAID MOTHER-OF-PEARL LACQUER BOX AND COVER YUAN DYNASTY (1279-1368) The top of the box finely inlaid with mother-of-pearl to depict Shoulao descending from the sky standing on swirling clouds, below are gathered the Eight Daoist Immortals each holding their respective attributes and eight female musicians playing flutes, a drum and a reed organ, and three female Immortals seated upon phoenix, all beside an elaborate palace in a landscape with cranes in flight beside a willow tree and monkeys on a pine tree above rockwork and breaking waves, to the left hand edge inlaid with the makers name Liu Shaoxu zuo , the vertical sides with ogival panels depicting scholars and attendants alternating with various birds and flowers on the top, on the bottom with animals, between delicate bands of composite floral scroll, the spreading foot with further panels of birds and animals, all on a floral cell-pattern ground, the corners bound horizontally with silver wire in a herringbone-pattern, the interior accommodating a fitted dark brown lacquer tray, the edge of the tray and lip of the box inlaid with cell-pattern bands, the interior of the foot applied with brownish-black lacquer 14 1/4 in.
