A LOUIS XVI VARI-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX by Nicolas Marguerit (fl. 1763-1790), marked, Paris, 1780/1781, with the first charge and discharge marks of Henry Clavel, and later French control marks Oval box, the cover, side and base panels engine-turned with horizontal reeding scattered with pellets, the cover centred with an oval reserve chased in four-colour gold on a frosted ground with a reclining dog watching a bird perched on the wall of the ruins of a temple in a landscape with basket of fruit to the right, framed by a frosted band appplied with gold beads, the side walls divided by four circular frosted gold reserves chased with trophies of Painting, Gardening, Love and Harvest within ribbon-twist borders, the frosted rims applied with beads, roses and stylised flowerheads 36 in.
