A Louis XV Tortoiseshell, Boulle and Gilt Brass Mounted Mantel Clock of Large Proportions, by Nicolas Gourdin of Paris, the 10ins diameter gilt brass dial inset with enamel Roman numerals cartouches of shaped outline, the dial centre cast with the profile of a young prince and bold leaf scroll ornament, to the two train month going movement with outside locking plate striking on a bell, contained in tortoiseshell boulle case with ornate gilt brass mounts in the style of Charles Cressant (1685-1768), the whole surmounted by figure of Chronos seated on a globe and flanked by bold leaf scroll mounts, front arch with gilt brass mount depicting eagle and scythe above shaped door, the lower section cast gilt brass mounts depicting Bellona seated on a chariot flanked by four mythical birds, shaped base with masks to front and bold Rococo pattern feet, 37ins high Note: Nicolas Gourdain recorded working Paris 1740-1747 - He devised a deadbeat escapement and experimented on curb of balance spring - A fine cartel clock with bronze mounts by Charles Cressant at the Palais de Justice, Paris
