A Louis XV Gilt Bronze Mounted Ebony Commode manner of andre charles boulle, 18th century with alteration having a rectangular marble top with rounded corners on a bombe form case fitted with two drawers, the upper drawer mounted with a lion mask, the lower drawer mounted with two female masks, both drawers inlaid with brass foliate scrolls and flanked by acanthus mounts headed with masks at the corners, raised on splayed legs ending in hairy paw cast sabots. Height 36 1/4 x width 50 1/2 x depth 23 7/8 inches. Estimate $ 10,000-20,000 Property from the Toledo Museum of Art, sold for the benefit of the Art Acquisition Fund Provenance: Rosenberg & Stiebel, New York, 1960 Stable, complete condition overall; with key. Drawers function smoothly. Bronze mounts with fairly even bright patina but some small casting cracks. Marble top old, probably original, with areas of repaired breaks and repaired chips. Some tarnished brass veneers throughout with a few areas of slightly lifted brass veneer. Light veneer cracquelure throughout. Drawer liners and top of case beneath marble with wide age cracks. Holes on the interior side walls of the case suggest that the commode had carrying handles at one time, and that some (perhaps all) of the veneers may have been repaired/replaced. Some bronze mounts are probably 19th century replacements, or have been moved from their original location. Acquired from Rosenberg & Stiebel in 1960, with British collection provenance prior to that.
