A Lost Parcel from the Celebrated Horace Hird Collection | Elizabeth I (1558-1603), First 'Tentative' Coinage, Third and Fourth Issue [Crown Gold], Crown [of 5 Shillings], (Pyx Period: 1 March 1570 - 15 December 1571), Tower, ELIZABETH : D .' G .' ANG .' FR .' ET : HI .' REGINA, crowned bust 4C left, rev. (m.m.) SCVTVM : FIDEI : PROTEGET : EAM crowned square-topped shield dividing E-R, 2.61g [40.4grns], 12h, m.m. castle (HCN 169; Montagu -; Murdoch -; Ryan -; Lockett 3294 = Schneider I, 751A; Brown & Comber H12; North 1995; Spink 2522A), a trace of doubling and faint crimping, otherwise handsomely cabinet toned, a really bold very fine, an extremely rare privy mark, especially in this most pleasing condition Brown and Comber record three instances of this privy mark for denomination [not accounting for duplication] as listed in the Spink Numismatic Circular and Seaby Bulletin between 1937 and 1983. Challis records the mint output for this Pyx Period at £14,200 for Crown Gold.
