A Lost Parcel from the Celebrated Horace Hird Collection | Elizabeth I (1558-1603), Second 'Restoration' Coinage, Fifth Issue [Fine Gold], Quarter-Angel [of 2.5 Shillings], (Pyx Period: 1 June 1580 - 31 December 1581), Tower, (m.m.) ELIZABETH : D : G : ANG : FRANCIE, St. Michael vanquishing Dragon, rev. (m.m.) ET • HIBERNIE • REGINA • FIDEI •, the G re-entered over a lower G, Ship surmounted by square-topped shield and crucifix mast dividing E and Rose, twisted rigging 2/1, with bowsprit, waves lapping below, 1.24g [19.0grns], 4h, m.m. Latin Cross [over Greek Cross on obv. only] (HCN 128; Montagu -; Murdoch I, 617 same obverse die; Lockett 1978 this coin; SCMB 448 [1955], G1309 same dies; Comber II, 119; Schneider I, 776; Brown & Comber E7; North 1993; Spink 2528), a bright but compact striking, the peripheries uniformly sharp, near very fine, very rare Brown and Comber record six instances of this privy mark for denomination [not accounting for duplication] as listed in the Spink Numismatic Circular and Seaby Bulletin between 1937 and 1983. Challis records the mint output for this Pyx Period at £33,517. Only three examples of this overmark have been traced by this cataloguer in modern commerce (Spink, 2 December 2013, lot 626; SJA 11, 8 May 2009, lot 55 [pierced]; and, DNW 62, 30 June 2004, lot 78)
