Katalognummer: CA0919-084 A LARGE WOOD DAOIST IMMORTAL, MING China, 16th-17th century. The lacquered and gilt wood statue gently carved to depict a youthful Daoist immortal with serene facial expression, flowing robe revealing the bare chest, beaded necklace, ornate headdress and accentuated earlobes, standing barefoot. The right hand in vitarka mudra. Provenance: Austrian private collection. Condition: Losses, wear and weathering as seen on the pictures. Scattered minor residues of old paste. Generally, in well-presentable and, most important, original condition. Weight: 2.4 kilograms Dimensions: height 53 cm This gilt lacquered wood figure is remarkable for the superb craftsmanship demonstrated in the naturalistic rendering and arrangement of the folds of the robe cascading over the shoulders and around the legs, and the peaceful expression with eyes downcast. The technique of coating carved wood figures with gilt-lacquer appears to have emerged during the early part of the Ming dynasty, continuing on to the Qing dynasty and echoing in form and decoration Buddhist bronze figures.
