A large Kashmiri Qur'an, in Arabic, decorated manuscript on paper [North India (probably Kashmir), early nineteenth century] 292 leaves, complete, single column, 15 lines of rounded black naskh, surah headings in red thuluth, opening bifolia, closing bifolia and bifolia opening the surah Al-Isra all with illuminated borders of pink and purple flowers on green spiraling vines against a striking blue floral background, verses marked with small red marks throughout the text, leaves double-ruled in red, blue and gold, some pencil inscriptions to margins, a few small spots or light stains, else excellent condition, 285 by 170 mm. (written space 215 by 115 mm.); in contemporary leather over pasteboards, blindstamped with central medallion and corner pieces with floral sprays, rebacked and edges repaired in modern morocco, lightly rubbed This is a particularly large format Kashmiri Qur'an in an excellent state of preservation. With the exception of the 3 double-page borders present in the text, the style is striking in its simplicity with a clear absence of roundels and marginal ornaments marking the verses. The script is also written in a noticeably more rounded naskh than calligraphy from Persia (and further west), indicating the influences of the Hindu scriptures on the eastern Islamic world.
