A LARGE DUTCH MAHOGANY AUTOMATON AND MUSICAL LONGCASE CLOCK
LATE 18TH CENTURY, THE CHAPTER RING SIGNED JAN HENDRIK KUHN (1751-1810); THE MUSICAL MOVEMENT LATER
A LARGE DUTCH MAHOGANY AUTOMATON AND MUSICAL LONGCASE CLOCK LATE 18TH CENTURY, THE CHAPTER RING SIGNED JAN HENDRIK KUHN (1751-1810); THE MUSICAL MOVEMENT LATER The hexagonal dome with floral carved trellis above a moulded hood with triangular pediment surmounted by two carved giltwood figures depicting Father Time and Venus, pierced soundfrets to frieze and sides, each side with a pierced and moulded door, the arched hood door flanked by fluted columns with gilt-bronze capitals, conforming rear pilasters, the rectangular trunk door with guilloche moulding, rozettes and centred by a rams' head, flanked to each side by a fluted column with gilt-bronze capital, the concave shaped plinth centred by a portrait-medallion and rozettes to each corner, on four foliate carved feet, old paper exhibition-label to the reverse inscribed TENTOONSTELLING VOOR OUDE KUNST/RIJKSMUSEUM 1929 and in ink E. Mossel . The polychrome painted brass dial with the figures of Jupiter, Juno, Venus and Neptune allegorical of the four elements and a scene of a musician with an automaton arm playing before a family seated in front of a house, the background with an angler with an automaton arm moving up and down, the silvered arcaded Roman and Arabic chapterring signed JAN HENDRIK KUHN/AMSTERDAM , matted and engraved centre with blued steel hands, two ringed winding holes and one later winding hole below, silvered later engraved subsidiary ring indicating the tunes, date aperture beneath, the later eight day five pillar movement with three trains mounted on a solid walnut seatboard, anchor escapement, Dutch strike on two bells, the musical train positioned above the movement with six positions, two divided tunes playing before strike on the half hour and hour, twenty-nine hammers on fifteen bells, 20.4 cm. long and 10.5 cm. diameter pinned brass barrel, three large brass weights; pendulum; crank key. 310 cm. high x 80 cm. wide x 54 cm. deep
